Horse Whisperer is the project of Max Syed-Tollan (www.maxsyedtollan.net), a multi-disciplinary artist-composer working across sound, moving image, text and performance, and a graduate of The Glasgow School of Art. ‘Planctae/8 Fictions’ is his sophomore release with GLARC, the first of which (‘The Fifth Season’) was dubbed “one of the most memorable debuts of 2016” by The List.
Exploring the split nature of the format, this latest GLARC cassette showcases two new works (a side for each). The contrasts will be apparent, and so it is perhaps the task here to discern continuities - both are assemblages of clearly differentiated parts built to a set of concealed rules; draft schematics for a language in the midst of being imagined. Emerging from a practice combining compositional rigour with improvisatory playfulness, the music here channels a feral curriculum of influences from bird song to the baroque, all reprocessed into something new. An aesthetic departure from 2016’s foray into folk-fanged “bedroom-prog”, ‘Planctae/8 Fictions’ nonetheless retains the direct approach of Horse Whisperer’s debut release, applied now to the production of DIY chamber music.
